Mr. Brakewell, a former police officer was accused of committing a robbery of a Mecca Bingo Hall and then trying to rob 11 days later the Gala Bingo Hall in Bradford. Matthew Brakewell will remain in the custody of the court until his sentencing on November 24, 2006.
October 13, 2006, it was reported that a former police officer who stole 2,000 UK Pounds from a bingo hall while pretending to be an undercover agent was caught red handed while trying to do the same crime in Bradford. The suspect, 29 year old Matthew Brakewell, who has been part of the Greater Manchester and Isle of Man police departments, was apprehended by officers at a Bradford based bingo hall 11 days after he stole two thousand pounds from the Mecca Bingo Hall in Rochdale. Last week, when he first appeared before the magistrates of the Bradford Crown Court, the magistrates were told that on September 22, 2006, Mr. Brakewell set foot on the Mecca Bingo Hall premises and pretended that he was part of an undercover operation codenamed Phoenix. Brakewell defended himself saying that he was putting tracking devices on the cash bags but soon after he left, employees of the bingo hall discovered that about 2,000 UK Pounds was missing from the cash register. 11 days after the incident at the Mecca Bingo Hall, Mr. Brakewell allegedly posed as an undercover agent again to gain access on the cash register. But the magistrates learn that Matthew Brakewell’’s picture had already been circulated and he was detained on the premises until the police arrived. He even tried to run off and pointed a gun on the law enforcers.

Prosecutor Louise Azmi said that the officers hid behind a van but were still able to apprehend Matthew Brakewell after he put the gun down on the ground. Paul Milner, Matthew Brakewell’’s solicitor, said that his client is mired in debt. Brakewell was denied bail and remain in custody when he has made his first appearance before the Bradford Crown Court Magistrates. He has pleaded guilty on the charges regarding the Rochdale incident. He also admitted of possessing a firearm, a Glock semi-automatic pistol and pointing it at police officers Daniel Stocks and Steve Mullaney. Court Recorder David Bradshaw told the accused that he was prepared to adjourn the case for the preparation of the report regarding the pre-sentencing on his case and the psychiatric report but told Matthew Brakewell that he had no convictions but any of the judges that will look at his case will be deciding on a custodial sentence. Matthew Brakewell was remanded back in custody until his sentencing on November 24, 2006. A spokesman for Gala Bingo Hall said that they are very sure and can confirm that there has been an attempted robbery at their Bradford club last October 2, Monday.

The Gala spokesman further added their staff has been very suspicious of Mr. Brakewell and immediately contacted the authorities and the culprit was immediately arrested. Fortunately, no one was hurt during the whole incident.
